Gold has been found in small quantities in all states except Hawaii. Most northeastern gold is glacial placer as opposed to lode deposits like are found out west.
As glaciers pushed southward they moved rock and soil with them. When they receded, the goild bearing eath was left behind.

Gold has been found in Pennsylvania in the 1800s, and there may still be small quantities/pockets of gold left in some of the mining areas in western PA.
