I don't understand a holiday where people take a day or two off of work to prepare food for 8 hours, then eat it all in 20 minutes until they're so full they feel sick. Then the men go unbutton their pants and watch a ballgame on TV while the women clean up the mess.

I realize what the true intention of the holiday originally was, but anymore it's just an excuse to take the day off, see your family, and make a pig of yourself.

If people were truly thankful, they'd probably FAST that day so that they'd appreciate the plentiful food they have the rest of the year.

I agree with you with regard to the fast, I think that would open a lot of eyes as far as being thankful. Like "every" other "holiday" Thanksgiving has become commercialized and it is up to individuals and individual families to start and keep traditions that are for their true meanings (not that we should celebrate the settlers sitting down at a table with the Indians and then stabbing the Indians in the back and taking their land), leaving the materialism to the greedy. Hey we were always just happy that we had food on the table, back in the day. Now we are thankful, as we are everyday, that we woke to see another day. So keep your views, I think (not that I am anybody) that they are just. Start your own tradition, then maybe, in the future, Thanksgiving won't be viewed as another money spending, greedy family coming to your house to eat all your food, then use your electricity, water, your bathroom, and everything else they can get their fat little greedy hands on and don't clean jack, leaving you with the mess, holiday.

I feel the same way! It is just another day for me! I am thankfull everyday for my family and life and the home I have! I understand the concept and the true meaning of Thanksgiving but I don't need a day to do what I do everyday. I love my family very much! My kids and my husband are my life and I am very thankful for them! I do love the rest of my family as well and we can't always get together on thanksgiving cause we are scattered all over the world. We do call each other and wish them a Happy Thanksgiving! As for the Big meal who needs it when you will stuffing your face again 3 weeks later for Christmas!!

Thanksgiving is NOT a joke! It is a very important part of our history and many people still uphold those traditions! Many families are unable to get together except for holidays and when they do for Thanksgiving after eating they tell each other what they are thankful for! Then they go watch the games or some families sit around and play games and talk!
Don't stereo-type everyone so quickly!

No, actually I think it's the best holiday of the year. Like anything in life, it is what you MAKE it. It doesn't have to be like the way you describe.

Compared to Christmas which seems all about gift giving and the mad rush to buy things, Thanksgiving concentrates on food, family, and friends. I always have a great time.

I'd suggest maybe going to a different Thanksgiving this year or better yet...go to two. Do one with your friends and your family. Do something else besides TV....

I'm not American and new to this whole Thanksgiving thing. I'm pretty sure that while looking up on the history of this tradition i will find things that would give me more perspective on this celebration.

But following the "giving thanks" theme i try to celebrate it the way my new family does. They are thankful for all the blessings they receive, and that even though things go rough or go awry we are still able to think and do something to make things somewhat livable and bearable. It's not always turkey and comfort food, but we have the comfort of one another.

Thanksgiving seems to me from what i've seen has evolved from just turkey and parties, indians and pioneers to just being thankful that we are alive and we are together.

I hate it! I think it's all about food. And, like you said, football. Another excuse for us lazy Americans to take a day off from work and give the kids more unneeded time off from school. We should find something to be thankful for EVERY day, not just one day per year. Plus, my family, and I'm sure many others, never bothered to say what we were thankful for. We just ATE like pigs.

However, I DO love "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving." Toast and popcorn served on a ping pong table. Now THAT'S funny! LOL

I'm sorry you don't have a very good day on Thanksgiving. I'd like to show what a great day it can be with family and friends, and other letters will vouch for that. I especially remember playing "PIT", "ROOK", or Chinese Checkers, and pigging out on a huge platter of divinity later in the day, that my mom made by hand, no electrical beaters.

A crook mistakenly made a counterfeit $8 bill instead of a $10 bill. He decided to try it out anyway. He went to the teller at the local bank and asked for change. The teller looked at the $8 bill and gave the crook two $4 bills as change

I am always thankful to get this and any opportunity to spend time with my loved ones, even though we're gorging ourselves. I know someday when my parents are gone that these are the memories that we will look back upon with love. So no, I don't think it's a joke at all.

For me, the ultimate thanksgiving would be to serve turkey dinners to homeless people. Gonna do that and think about what I'm thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!
