This motivational speaker type came into one of my classes with his long-winded and boring presentation about 'building a resume'. Two quotes that struck me as incredibly stupid were "Employers don't give a hoot what your GPA is" and "if you don't have any job experience, nobody will hire you".

If employers never hired anyone without job exeprience, how would anyone get job experience in the first place? With regards to the first, why would anyone want to pass hiring a smart, hard-working A-student to instead hire an unmotivated and stupid C student? This guy seems to be here on the mission of scaring undergrads into going out and working as underpaid labor for local companies.

Should I take him seriously or is he full of crap?

He has some truth, but some garbage. My take on it:

1) GPA - my experience is it only matters for your first job or within a year or two after you graduate, but after that, does not matter at all. Basically if you have no experience the potential employer needs something to evaluate (hence the GPA because there is almost nothing else), but after you have worked a bit, it's all about skills, marketability of your work experience and how well you present/sell yourself in an interview. Think of it this way, a GPA is nothing more than a partial measurement of who you once were, not who you are now, and the longer ago that was, the less relevant it is.

2) "If you don't have experience no one will hire you" - your logic is correct. Someone has to be hiring otherwise everyone would be unemployed . The reality is more like "if you don't have experience, some will really want to hire, some might at least consider you, and some will never hire you." On one extreme, professional services firms specifically target people with no experience (but great academic credentials) - mainly the "big X" consulting/auditing firms and boutique firms. They prefer to mold the new hires and have a culture that caters more to the young and energetic that are not likely to have any family or other external commitments. Industry is the other extreme, they prefer experienced people that don't require as much training, and who are more mature and bring practical experience to the table. And some are in between, but recognize they have to hire the inexperienced to groom them to take over the reins one day.

Actually he was pretty on the nose with his points, his delivery was just way off...
Its quite important to finish and excel at school because you have no job experience yet... so basically school will be your experience, until you can actually apply what your learning now... to what you can advance at later.
And MANY jobs will tell you, that you don't have much experience for certain positons, which is why a lot of colleges kids do internship... or start at entry level positions.

So Im afraid they he was was not that full of crappy, jsut crappy delivery!

When you are fresh out of college, many employees are interested in your GPA. After your first job, they really don't care.

"if you don't have any job experience, nobody will hire you"
>that is why it can be so hard to get a first job and many times you just take whatever you can get.

Well...companies do look at GPA when they're hiring for an entry-level position, but they're also looking at what else you did while you were in school. Companies might pass up a straight A student if all they did was go to school.

He doesn't sound very motivating. A good GPA won't get you a job but certainly is better than a low one. You are right about the job experience, this guy sounds like a joke to me.

I've met plenty of A+ students that are dumb as hell, just because someone is a C student does not make him or her dumb, maybe you should listen to some of the things he is saying. And by the way I never went to college and I was a C student in high school and I own my own real estate investment company, some people are not good students but they are very smart just the same, at least I will not have to pay off thousands of $ in loans!

He's generalizing everything you stated. There are lots of employers who hire people without job experience, but have college degrees. Just think about it this way, if you think he's full of bull, then he probably is. And, just think, he got paid to make you depressed. That's not exactly what I call "motivating"!!
good luck.

uncertain of any military bases or colleges in San Fran, yet i assume its continuously achieveable (whether no longer likely) that he may be a recruiter...........yet many times they do no longer deliver every person without some experience contained in the forces as a recuiter. enormously achieveable he's stuffed with crap, yet you by no potential comprehend. you have gotten caught that one in a million condition.

experience is very important, and they don't give a sh*t what your gpa is. why would they? that really doesn't matter. if someone has more experience than you, they will get hired before you. yeah, that's true.
