No, he didn't die. But he was taken into another world. In the entire story of DB, death is never the end. THere are so many ways to return bakc to the world of the living. ANyway, his appearance in the OVA, proves that he is not dead. He just moved on.

A century after the end of the Shadow Dragon saga...

in the Hero's Legacy OVA...
an aged Pan sits in the stands of the Tenka'ichi Budôkai to cheer on her grandson, Goku Junior. As the young boy enters the ring, his opponent appears: it is a distant descendant of Vegeta's, Vegeta Junior. The two fight, and quickly astonish each other by becoming Super Saiyans. As Pan watches, she catches a glimpse of a familiar face in the stands: her grandfather, Son Goku. When she tries to follow him, however, he disappears, but Pan knows that he has returned. With the battle of his descendant finished, Goku walks along the outside of the Tenkaichi Budokai arena, reminiscing on all the major events of his lifetime. Finally, after one last look around, he looks up into the sky and flies upward. With his destiny long since fulfilled, and his great-great-grandson's just beginning, he makes one last wave to us, the viewers, catches his power pole, and flies off on the Nimbus to wherever it's taking him: thus the Dragon Ball Trilogy comes to an end.
