The word patronize has three meanings listed in my Webster's American Family Dictionary:
1. to give (a store, restaurant, hotel, etc.) one's regular patronage
2. to behave in an offensively condescending manner toward
3. to act as a patron toward (an artist, institution, etc.); support

I believe the meaning you are indicating would be number two in this list.

from my 1926 dictionary patronise or patronize ,to act as a patron towords ,,support or protect,, frequent as a customer.
that's what it ment in 1926 .
