As for best fantasy, I'll second my colleague who says "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

In 1965, the members of the annual World Science Fiction Convention decided to recognize the best ever sci-fi or fantasy series. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was considered, but didn't win. It was topped by what I will submit to you as my favorite work of fiction: Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy.

The three books that make up the classic series ("Foundation," "Foundation and Empire," and "Second Foundation") broach questions dealing with the way both leaders and cultural forces shape history told against the story of the fall of one Galactic Empire and the rising of a Second one. Asimov was influenced by Edward Gibbon's "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" in writing the trilogy (he once characterized it as "a little bit of cribbin' from the works of Edward Gibbon")

Check it out. I think once you read the first two sections of "Foundation" (they're called "The Psychohistorians" and "The Encyclopedists," respectively) you'll be hooked.

Can't help you very much as I pretty much stick to fantasy myself. But I think I would pick either The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks or J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books for best fantasy.

tough question, but best and worsts are relatives and they are up to the individual reader.

One person's best book could be The Great Gatsby, another could be Catcher in the Rye, another Oh! The Places You'll Go.
