I would have to suggest...

Now and Then, Here and There...13 episodes
A Japanese boy named Shu tries to save a strange girl, Lala Ru, from kidnappers and is transported to an alternate Earth on the brink of being swallowed by the sun....
Brilliant anime...adult themes...an unblinking look at a world at war...that could easily be our own...

AND

Saikano...13 episodes
A teenage boy and girl struggle to stay in love when the girl's body is transformed into Japan's ultimate weapon.
Brutal dissertation on war...and how it affects all who are touched by it...even those who think they are immune...
Some of the saddest moments in anime... you may find in this drama...unforgettable....anime tv series at its best...

AND

"Planetes" (2003) [TV-Series 2003-2004]...26 episodes

shadowwarriorsamurai from IMDB says...
"The show takes place in the far future, space is now a common normality. Colinies have been set up in the Moon and Mars ever since the day they were first ventured. And people can freely travel to both of these worlds as any person can buy an airliner ticket and travel anywhere around the globe. But unfortunately space is also a dangerous place, because it's became polluted with junk dangerously floating out in space due to the amount of satellites and other equipment that was shot out into space but never returned. And has literally became a shooting gallery for any ships that travel out in space. So, the space program has created a debris section. A group who's job is simply to haul any debris that float around in space and shoot it into Earth's orbit to burn up to nothing. "

soft and sweet, measured and paced...the story slowly opens up...as the characters do the same...superb anime...

All depends on what you are looking for. For ninja action check out Peace keepers. For occult check out Hellsing. For fantasy you can check out Record of the Lotos wars. For futuristic battles check out mobile fighter G gundam. Or for a couple quick fixes check out ff advent children, Venus wars, akira, ninja scrolls, fist of north-star, vampire hunter d, or vampire hunter d bloodlust. For something American you can check out animatrix, spawn, lady death, heavy metal, or batman beyond. There are so many options out there it is unbelievable. A couple other good once are outlaw star, big O, neon geneses Evangeline, and one of my personal favorites Serial Experiment Lain.
