They are under the mistaken impression that for one person to be rich, others must be poor. They also mistakenly assume that the only way to be rich is to cheat. (After all they're the smartest person they know, and if anyone could get rich honestly, it would be them, right?)
At the root of it all they suffer from a profound ignorance of economics, and the way economics and human instinct interact. You can point out that Wealth must increase because the world total is much higher than it was 1,000 years ago, but they will not listen. They cannot and do not want to understand the difference between currency and wealth. Many of them are simply too arrogant to believe that they could be wrong. They choose to put more faith in their emotions than in their intellect.

I don't want to give away other people's money. I want to use my money to buy a healthy society, one in which people are actually taken care of when their lives completely fall apart and in which people are given the education and opportunities to make something of their lives. I don't want my money to pay for stupid wars of aggression against sovereign nations that were no threat to us. I'd rather use my money to get me some health insurance and to pay for good public schools so that, when I'm old and ready to retire, there are enough smart people out there to keep the economy going and support me as I'm supporting the elderly right now. I can't do this alone because I don't have the power or the money. We all band together to do it, and it'll be great.

You're sadly mistaken. The Republicans have been giving away big money to war profiteers and contractors who are stealing federal funds left and right. Corporate America (who "Bush called 'his base') get all kinds of tax write offs and it all amounts to a $49 trillion deficit, the largest in world history, some say. Who amongst the poor are getting anything? Because the money is going to Bush's friends, there is no money left for food stamps or medical programs for kids. I hope you help your starving fellow Americans after you wake up from your pathetic sleep and become educated. Careful you don't find yourself in that boat.

When Clinton left office there was a 200 billion dollar surplus in the US Treasury. With Bush we are looking at a 250 billion dollar deficit - who gives it a way? And by the way the Iraq war does not justify the deficit.

So they don't have to give away theirs, you can bet that T. Kennedy, N.Pelosi, J.Kerry, G. Sorros, etc. have all their money nicely tucked away somewhere where the gov.'t. can't get to it..

Perhaps you forgot Bush's 'prescription drug plan'? It's the biggest welfare expansion I can think of.
