There is a special pen one can buy in most office supply stores which you write a small line on the bill. If the line goes from light beige to dark black the bill is phony. The mark should stay beige. this pen is able to detect that the paper the bill is printed on is not the real government used paper. Many stores use these pens to detect real $50 or $100 bills.

On a bill that old, the only good easy test is to stripe it with one of the special pens that are used to identify counterfeit currency. Harder ways are to examine the picture carefully with a magnifying glass, but it's hard to describe what it is that you should be looking for. Best bet: take the thing to a bank and ask them to look at it.

Easiest way for all of us average joes is to look for the magnetic strip embedded in the bill.
Hold the bill up to the light. Look at the side of the bill in your left hand (face up) and you'll see the line of the magnetic strip.
