I don't know about all bc pills, but I do know with experience that "Nortrel 1/35" pills will cause your milk to dry up. The OB/GYN that delivered my baby and saw me after (not my regular Dr through out the whole preg, but that is another story all together) knew that I was breastfeeding, and I know he knew because I told him during the appointment where he prescribed the pills. I saw him about two and a half weeks after delivering and by the time that my son went in for his four week check up I had had to switch over to formula because I was no longer making milk for him. Needless to say our new family Dr (who also happens to be the CEO at our hospital) wasn't very happy when she heard what had happened.

The most common kinds of birth control pills- the "combination" pills, or those with both progesterone and estrogen- are very likely to cause supply problems. In fact, MOST women will have some problem with milk supply on those pills.
You *can* take the progestin-only "minipill" (Micronor, Errin, Nor-QD, Ovrette, and Microval, for example), which is MUCH less likely to mess with your supply. Depo is also progestin-only, but isn't recommended because you can't stop it quickly if you do have a problem.
As a side note, all kinds of hormonal bc are considered safe for your baby- they don't pass into your milk in any quantity at all. The main concern is their effect on you and your supply.

because birth control convinces your body you are already pregnant it could definitely have an effect on your milk supply. You would need a very low dosage for that reason but more importantly so you're not feeding it to baby.
Dr.'s, midwives, health professionals do not recommend taking a birth control pill while nursing, plain and simple. Yes, some people do it...like anything, but the fact is you are risking passing that onto baby and you are risking drying up your milk supply earlier than you or your baby might be ready to.
There are lots of other methods so seek one out that doesn't effect baby.

Mini-pills will NOT cause your milk to dry up, and they have no effect on your baby.
I nursed each of my kids until they were 14 months old, and I took mini-pills the whole time.
It was NOT an uninformed, uneducated, and irresponsible decision. My OB/GYN and I talked a lot about it, and decided that they were the best option.

THere is only one type of Birth control that is safe to take while breast feeding and it is possible to lower your milk supply, but rare if you would dry up I would think. As long as your baby is feeding ok and gaining weight you have nothing to worry about. Smoking and stress are other factors that can dramatically affect your milk supply. Just relax and if you need more info, contact your obstetrician. Good luck and Kudos for breast feeding! It is hard sometimes but worth it for you and your little one.

Some bc's can do that.
I found that the "mini pill" didn't affect it.
Also, if you are trying not to dry up... make sure you drink plenty of water.

I was told not to take the pill as it can cross to the baby through the milk. I did use Depo while nursing and nursed for two years. Good luck and happy nursing!

It could. If you are breastfeeding, the best bc option is non hormonal. (Condoms, diaphgram and the such.) The mini Pill has less hormones than the regular Pill and is commonly used.
