"The Longest Day" is about the invasion by the allies on the beaches of Normandy to free France from German rule. I find it absolutly riveting. What's your favorite war movie?

"The Dirty Dozen" with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, Clint Walker, Ernest Borgnine, Telly Sevallas, and many more I know I'm forgetting. I also like "The High and the Mighty", "Strategic Air Comand", "From Here to Eternity".

The Longest Day from 1962 is a rather good star studded affair. It is long but holds your attention.

I like Apocolypse Now because it is so over the top and strange.

I also like Tora Tora Tora and Run Silent Run Deep.

My favorite war film is "The Great Escape". It tells a side of WWII that we hardly ever hear of and it presents it in a very powerful way. That and the soundtrack is classic.

I would have to say To Hell and Back. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet. I also like The Green Beret and Tora Tora Tora.

"Saving Private Ryan" -- it really makes the experience of combat intense and horrifying (opening and closing battle scenes, especially), and the story signifies the importance of honor in spite of senselessness and overwhelming odds.
