like the lawyer for the defendant do they do a family backround check to see if somthing wroung with the family depending on the crime the defentdent comited?

Lawyers do have the ability to check on public records and they do have "investigators" to do work in looking into things so that they don't look like fools in front of a judge.

no but they may do later to make sure that they are not caught of guard by prosecution lawyer who is likely trying to dig up dirt. in some case background check may be relevant e.g child care
