Arthur himself didn't go off to seek the Holy Grail, but most of his knights did. He had a kingdom to run. This Grail was the cup from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper and was also used to catch his blood when he was crucified. Joseph of Arimathea took it to Britain. (It wasn't England yet.) Only sinless knights could be with the Holy Grail. Galahad, Percival and Bors were the only three worthy of that. Lancelot du Lac was unable to see the Grail, because he had already committed adultery with Queen Guinevere long before this quest began. As you see, Arthur's wife was an adulteress before the quest for the grail, not afterward. You and some answerers are confused about the tale. EDIT- Angela M is quite confused here. Arthur went off to war with Lancelot in France after his adultery was revealed and he slew 3 of Arthur's nephews. It was then that Mordred seized power. Arthur and Mordred slew each other when Arthur returned from France, and most of his knights died in the battle. This was many years after the quest for the Holy Grail.

You're right, according to the legend. The witch Morgana le Fay shows it to them, and they all take off to find it, thereby leaving the Court divided and distracted. She begins then to work the magic that brings Guenevere to Arthur, and Mordred (Arthur's illegitimate child by an incestuous encounter w/ Morgana) into the running for Arthur's throne in his absence...

Patrice -- this is at least your second question about the Arthur legends. It's time for YOU to do the research yourself...do your OWN homework. Is there something you don't understand about your assignment.
