They can pinch hard, but I never had one that was able to make me bleed. Once they clamp on, they just won't let go until you put them under running water. They seem to pinch for no apparent reason too. Once you get them to let go though, the pinch doesn't hurt anymore.

Hermit crabs will pinch if they feel threatened. It'll clamp on. The bigger the pincher, the worse it will hurt. The tauter the skin at the time, the less they have to hold onto, and the less it will hurt. When you pick one up to hold, stretch your hand out so that the fingers are curved downward, so the skin is tight.

Loose skin is easier to clamp onto. If they do pinch, they usually let go quickly. Don't shake your hand or try to pry it free. That will cause both you and him more pain and suffering. They pinch when they feel threatened or scared.

Yes they can make you bleed. Tell your kids to handle them in a stretched palm of the hand so they cant grab the skin. My daughter got pinched and it broke the skin. We had to teach her how to handle the crab properly. She sits on the floor so she cant drop the crab. It has not pinched her again......
