Hi, I currently live in Puerto Rico and even though I love living here Im seriosly considering moving to Texas. I keep leaning more towards Houston and Katy but my job transfer would be easier to Dallas. The problem is PR is just getting way to expensive comparing what you make to how much things cost in an Island since almost everything has to be imported and since space is limited the land cost are way high if you are thinking of building a home or buying. Since I live in PR Im very used to the hot weather, rain, and humidity, not so much the cold weather. How are the winters? Are there many jobs available. I also am completly bilingual does this make it easier to find a good paying job. I have a 8 year old daughter, is It a good place to raise children? I keep hearing about the traffic in Houston whats all that about is it really that bad? How long does it take to drive from Katy to dowtown Houston? What about Dallas?
Sorry so many questions....

I live in Houston...and the traffic isn't that bad. At least compared to Northern California where we used to live.

Katy to Downtown Houston will probably be 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what time you leave and what specific route that you take. But Katy is a nice area...they have a nice shopping mall out there that my wife loves!

Winters are quite mild and it's a good place to raise children - as long as you end up in a good school district.

I really can't answer your questions about Dallas.

I live in Katy. Sometimes the commute to downtown can take 30 minutes, other times 1 hour 30 minutes. It is unpredictable, so you have to leave early if you get a job downtown. With the construction on I-10, the traffic can be bad at any time of the day, although some days are better than others.

Katy has good schools, but the better area is SOUTH of I-10. The property values on the other side don't seem to be holding their own. There has been a lot of low cost housing constructed over there, so the houses are impossible to sell in case you need to move.

As far as I am concerned, I would never move to Dallas. Dallas is way too formal for me. It feels like you need to be dressed up to go to the grocery store there. I would prefer Fort Worth over Dallas. It is a very cool city, and the people are friendly. Honestly, if it were me and I was starting all over again, I would move to San Antonio. They have no traffic and the cost of living is low. And it is right by my favorite lake. Canyon Lake... It is also a dryer climate there....

Hope this helps...

I live in a suburb in the Dallas metroplex (Rowlett/Rockwall). Its really nice out here. I am away from the noise of the city (downtown), but just close enough for a short commute (20-30 minutes from I-30, depending on traffic). We have great shopping and there is alot of things to do.

I grew up in this area and I love it. The Richardson and Plano school districts are some of the best in Texas.

There are many jobs available and quite a few resources to get them. If you are billingual, it is really easy to get a job in Texas since we have an increasing Hispanic population.

We have mild winters and super hot summers. Once in awhile we will get sleet or snow. But not very often, and mostly in Jan or feb.

I have been to Houston/Katy, and the humidity and pollution isn't that appealing. But it is not a bad city at all. I would definitely recommend Big D!! Good Luck with your decision!

To answer the questions about Katy & Houston:

It's not any cheaper to live in Texas than PR. Maybe your money will buy more in Texas, their are three things which take up most peoples money in Texas. They are: 1.Housing, 2.Transportation, 3.Food. These take up 30-40% of most peoples yearly job salary.

The travel time from Katy to downtown houston is about 30-40 mins. depending on what transportation you are using. Bus or your own car. and accidents that slow down all transportation.
The area of houston has 3.1 million people living in and around houston, 5 counties surrounding it. In Harris County which covers down town houston, has over 56 separate police departments, along with the sherriffs and constables here.

The weather is hot from march-Oct. this year. It started cooling off some this week, but still is 82 degrees. Depending on your ability, jobs are good in houston.

Here's some info. on Dallas:
Dallas has alot of outter cities around it, which means plenty of people. It has better roads than houston does. It get cold every year and the have frozen roads and ice, it also gets much hotter in the summer, sometimes up to 106 degrees. It's dry heat, kinda like sticking your head in the oven and baking.
Their are pro's and cons. to both Cities. All I can say is to pick the one. You can always move to the other one, if you choose.
