They way I learned it is in steps:
1st Look for all numbers.
2nd Look for words like doubled, less than, twice, more than, things that can interpreted as a function.
3rd Figure out what you are missing, that is your variable.
4th Realize that you may need two equations, e.g. x=z+5, 20z+30(z+5)=420, your variable to solve could be z, x, or both.

I usually take a problem one sentence at a time. I deal with that sentence, write an equation if I need to, and move on to the next. If you have a specific problem you need help with, post it and I'm sure someone here will help.

I found out that answer is "2" after an uncomplicated 2 step attitude.. I observed that "factors" have been credited to numbers which could be pondered/reversed like 0,6,8 and 9, so all others a million,2,3,4,5,7 weren't getting any factors. 2nd step of my assertion is that 8 nicely worth 2 factors, jointly as 0,6 and 9 nicely worth one factor. as a effect, 2581 equals 0.5+2+0 = 2 :) Cheers, Dimitris

Use apples and oranges- physically lay it out, then let that part of your brain do the math
