Excalibur is the sword from the lake, a sacred sword. This fits in with the knowledge that ancient people gave offerings to lakes. The sword in the stone is caliburn, the sword of the young man, the warrior. This is broken in a duel with King Pellinore in which Arthur nearly dies. Merlin takes him to the lake where he receives excalibur from a Goddess or priestess. Excalibur is the sword of the King, the mature man, a sword of justice. This is in most books. I haven't cut and pasted anything The sword in the stone may be a reference to the way that bronze swords were made from a stone mould, suggesting that the legend draws on stories which go back to the bronze age. Bronze is too soft to beat with a blacksmith's hammer. The Mists of Avalon is based on Greek style Dianic moon goddess worship and has little relevance to Celtic myth. It's a good story but not true to Celtic legend.

It's not Excalibur--it's Caliburnus. Excalibur was extended to Arthur by the hand of the Lady of the Lake. I believe Caliburnus was the sword of Uther Pendragon, which Merlin used to test for the future king. B.

With Merlin as his adviser, Arthur begins his reign. He first fights Britain's enemies, and early texts describe him defeating the Saxons, Picts, and Scots and overrunning Ireland and Iceland. His conquests are made easier because of his marvelous sword, first called Caliburn and later known as Excalibur. He receives the sword from a hand that emerges from a lake. (In some versions of the story, Excalibur is the Sword in the Stone.)

Most people (including the ones who made the movie Merlin) are confused. Arthur pulled a sword out of the stone and later on it broke. THEN Merlin took him to the Lady of the Lake, who gave him Excaliber.

I'm sorry, but I don't know the name of the sword he pulled from the stone. However, it was not Excaliber.
