Good question. I believe it is called "political convenience".
The American government has done many good things throughout this nation's history. But that was not one of them. It was "convenient" at the time.
If they had chosen a different course, America would not have developed into the nation we know today. That might have meant there wouldn't have been enough land for colonists to settle. That would not have been a good thing, but we wouldn't have another blotch on U.S. history.
This nation needs spiritual healing. One way to accomplish this would be to offer formal apologies to cultural groups who were subjected to great suffering by our past leaders' lack of vision.(This does not mean pay them, but rather pay them RESPECT.)
This would include not only the American Indians, but also Japanese Americans whose families were forced apart at the start of world war two, and also an apology to African Americans for the slavery the south imposed on them.
This could bring great healing to our nation and might start to bring healing and build bridges among other cultural groups as well.
Sincere Christians (no matter what their ethnic origin) could start the ball rolling, first through praying about it, and then making the first efforts at apology and reconciliation.

Nothing more than White Male Establishment greed going on there. They considered the Natives to be less than human. Some Native Americans were kept as slaves, as well. I grew up in a rural area where there was a relatively large Native American population. The Indian Chicks were tougher than ****... you didn't want to mess with them.. but if they were your friends, you had some of the best friends, the most loyal friends in the world. The Native Americans I have known well in my life are some of the most beautiful, spiritual people I've ever known. It's a shame that their Clan were robbed of their culture, the children forced to speak English only, and the people relegated to some of the most hostile, infertile land on the continent. Criminal. Let's not even mention the blankets and other "gifts" infected with smallpox.

Honor them by giving them casinos?
Yes, it was wrong, and it was genocide. But, how do you go back in time and fix the horrific events of the past? You can't. No Native American is alive from those times. Do you pay their offspring? How does it help the people killed in the name of land and Christ? It doesn't.
Every country that exists now lived on the backs and the deaths of people in the past. As for lands, the reservations out West are vast. The land is not the greatest, but tribes have a great deal of autonomy within the US. In many ways, the tribes have more power than states to control actions within their borders.
This is not an issue that can be fixed.

Because we are all living on their land, bought and paid for from non-Native Americans, and don't want to open a can of worms. Why don't we compensate our Afro American brothers and sisters for all the unpaid labor provided by their ancestors after a refund for their purchase price? The abused indentured servants from Europe? The Japanese who were unjustly rounded up and placed in camps during WWII, let's compensate them for pain and suffering, too. The Chinese who had to pay taxes to mine gold in California during the gold rush of 1849 when nobodyelse had to. And by the way, Mexicans claim that the US stole half of Mexico when they should be claiming that Presidente and generalissimo Santa Ana sold the land (this is documented) and probably pocketed the millions of dollars--which they should sue their government for their share. What about the French who were shipped to the Lousyana bayous from er, er, was it Canada? Let's all find something where the governmnent has gyped us and knock if off our income tax!! Hardee har har

well here in the US we are tought that we were freinds with the indians and paid them for their land, theirs barely ever any talk about the wars over the land, and the killing of innocent wemon and children of the tribes to be sure and wipe them all out, weve heard it so much that most accept it as truth ( that bein, that we did no wrong to them) sadly no one questions it, yes alot of the land was bought or won in war, but just as much was stolen from them after havein it promised to them, but of course you never hear about those parts

There's a lot in history that didn't get reported. And what got written often depeneded on what side the writer was on. Fortunately there are records so don't let yourself be brainwashed, search for yourself. When you read history get more than one viewpoint.

Cody is right. We won the land.
I feel bad that the Indians were treated poorly. What can I do to remedy it? Treat them fair... and I do.
