What's a good strategy for getting work as a free lance film critic?

I've written some movie reviews but do not know exactly how to get in to speak with some of the newspaper editors. When calling on the phone, no one with authority is put through to speak with me.

Recruiter is usually the best way to get you in. They are the one who knows how to get a hold of the right person to talk to, and they sell you well. Do you have a profolio that keeps all of your reviews? I might even make copies of them and mail them in. Send it to the editor. Hope this helps
