Independent thought refers to having your own thoughts independent of others who attempt to influence you. I do embrace it. You will find that while I use the label atheist at times, I actually do not have a problem with most religions and will go out of my way to help those in them in the context of their beliefs. That's pretty independent from what I have seen around here.
