The property that "irritability exists in muscular substance alone and is quite independent of the nerves proceeding to it", from the reference. This assertion, by Albrecht von Haller, was highly controversial when proposed about 1750, but has become accepted by biologists.

Independent thought refers to having your own thoughts independent of others who attempt to influence you. I do embrace it. You will find that while I use the label atheist at times, I actually do not have a problem with most religions and will go out of my way to help those in them in the context of their beliefs. That's pretty independent from what I have seen around here.
