If you're looking for something as far as small animals, mice and rats make awesome pets. When you get them at a young age and work with them, they can be very affectionate. They can also learn tricks, and even learn their names. Guinea pigs are good too, but they urinate much more than mice and rats so therefore their cages have to be cleaned more often. Good luck!

Get a rat. They make great pets and are actually better pets for children than hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils. They're extremely smart and their personalities are similar to a dog's.

a rat would be a great pet for you. they are affectionate (personality is actually similar to a dog or cat) they almost never bite and so are actually recommended for even children, they are clean, they will come to their names, they actually want you to play with them and hold them. our rat can run looses in the apartment and will even go back to his cage to go to the bathroom. he will climb up our legs if we are sitting in a chair because he wants to be petted. the only downer to a rat is that they almost always get cancer and live about 3 years. but they are great pets.

Try a reptile of some sort. they can be really affectionate and they are prolly some of the easier to take care of pets.

but people are right...hamster are hard to care for and you would have to be really careful about what sex they were because they mate like crazy.

I heard that Siamese cats and poodles are great for people that do have allergies to animals. My aunt was allergic so these were the animals that didn't give her an allergic reaction.
