I just moved my hermit crabs (all PP's) from a 20 gallon tank to a 40 gallon. The tank has baked unbleached play sand on one side, and the Zoo Med eco earth in the other half. We have some calci-sand sprinkled around the tank, too. There are 2 20 gallon UTH in it. Humidity is at 75%, heat is at 81 degrees farenheit.

My question is this: this tank is fogging over badly (a sign of good humidity, I know), so we can't see the crabs exploring thier new digs. They LOVE the new tank, btw. Anyway, I know there are things that can be used to make windows and mirrors not fog up, like shaving cream, soap, and eye glass cleaner. But... would it be safe to use? It would be used to "wash" the inside, then cleaned off. I just don't think it would be safe, but thought someone might know for sure. Or if there's anything else that you know for certain would work and IS safe.

Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, all of those things would be harmful to the hermies.

The reason that your tank has the condensation like that, you have it that warm in the tank and it is alot cooler in your house. Once your house gets closer to the temp that is in the tank, then the condensation will go away. It is something that is very common this time of year, with all the weather changes.

Your temp and humidity is wonderful and a good place to keep it for your hermies to be happy and healthy.

Can you move the tank somewhere that is warmer so that the glass is warmer and this should help the humidity. What is happening is the warm moist air inside tank is hitting colder glass and resulting in fogging..........
