I thought it was blocking sun but how? They wear it in night games though. Also whya re strikeouts marked with a K instead of an X or the logical S?

The black under the eyes absorbes the glare of the sun and the stadium lights. An S in baseball is used for scoring a sacrifice, therefore, they had to use an different abbreviation for strikeout. A baseball score keeper in the late 1800's began using a K. The K caught on and is now the generally accepted abbreviation for strikeout.

Back in the 1880's some sports writers were starting to keep score. The letter "S" was used as a notation for a single. The letter "K" was used when a player strucKout.

The symbol "X" is used for a strike in bowling, but it is not based on the letter, simply an extension of the slash "/" used to signify the spare.

it's kind of like paint, it's made to keep the sun's glare out of their eyes.

black is soly for light refraction, the "smear" is to block the glare, and it looks cool :)

its for glare, not sun light.... at night games there is still glare from the stadium lights......

i dont know what its called but it is like sunblock 4 ur eyes.
