They are utter and complete jerks. The time for attempting dialogue with them is over.

do you know the def. of a neocon?

Shiraz was right about something

Depends though, if your opponent tries to make you look bad, or what you are supporting, by using crude comments, it makes you look good in my opinion. If it is a normal political conversation(not too many of those lately) then it does make you look like an @ss

This is how Catholics get their jollies. This is their favorite pastime. And the terrible thing is, it works. The Catholic gains admiration and earns points towards heaven every time they do this. They do this because they feel guilty by default, which is how the Catholic authorities want you to feel. When someone feels guilty, they are less inclined to exercise their prerogative. So they need to free themselves of guilt. By demonizing another person, they make themselves appear "good" and "innocent" in contrast. Innocence is the precondition for entitlement and power. The Catholic has their entitlement and power taken away from them when they sign up for the Catholic club and this is their loophole which they can use to re-empower themselves in their own mind.
So, to answer the question: it makes the person look better in the eyes of other Catholics and other ignorant folks besides Catholics. But to the rational, perceptive person, it just shows what an @ss they are.

In my experience the person who resorts to name calling and degrading the other person's character is usually the person who has a pretty weak case for their point of view. Demonizing is just another form of name calling, so I'm sure you can figure it out from here.

If you are really so slanted in one direction on this issue, you must be blind.
Perhaps people "demonize" because the questions are so idiotically aggressive. If you throw a "hard ball" are we suppose to not swing at it?
However, this is a perfect example of the liberal/left view of free speech. It's great if they agree with you, if not, they want you shouted down and shut up.

Political opponents or terrorist opponents?

If you mean terrorists, they've done an excellent job of demonizing themselves.

If you mean political opponents, you'll have to give me some specific examples. This will enable me to give you specific opposite examples.........

Unfortunately both sides do it. This is away for both groups not having to offer up a fully thought out plan of action. As long as the powerbroker and/or the people in power can keep us little people arguing amoungs ourselfs they can do what they want.

If the American voting public is a measure, it makes you look better than the other guy. Negative campaign ads work.

Politics is about getting elected so that you have power. So, if I look like and jerk and win, then I have met my primary goal. If the voters would stop rewarding the crap that goes on, then things could change.

Liberals have used that tactic for years and I guess they have gotten used to being seen as ***'s.

I am a liberal so I won't answer your question.
I don't think Super Shiraz could argue for your second option any more strongly.
