i know this sounds kind of vague, but there are alot of kids at my school who try out for the swim team, and i was wondering what you should be capable of doing so that your chances of making the team increase.

May sound stupid.....but......swim!
I do triathlons. There is some serious swimming involved with that. A lot of what you can accomplish as a swimmer is based purely on if you have the build and the talent for it. If your body is shaped such that the water lets you slip through it with little resistance, you will be fast with little effort. I'm not that way. I have to fight and struggle to make good time across the pool and even going fast and swimming well (for me) it takes me 20 strokes to cross the pool, and I have to breathe every left arm stroke. I will *never* be fast no matter how much I train. I simply am not the right shape to slide through the water. I saw a girl that could cross the pool in 3 strokes and breathe once and go much faster than I can and not work at all. She was just the right shape. Who knows? Maybe your shape is perfect for sliding through the water and you'll naturally be fast! Give it a try!
Other than that, if you are really interested, READ the book "Total Immersion". If you are naturally fast due to shape, this will describe the way to make you very fast using technique. Doesn't work for me, but the top swimmers in the world have been using this swim technique since the 1970's. If you haven't been swimming much, it's even easier to learn because you haven't learned the *wrong* way to swim and it will be much easier to train yourself to swim a faster way.
And then.....there's always hard work to add to the mix. But don't be afraid to go for it! If you're naturally the right shape and you can retrain quickly, you might find that very quickly you'll be much faster than seasoned swimmers. Swimming is largely a gift you either have or you don't.

it really depends on how competitive swimming is at your school. usually swim teams will take a lot of people unlike baseball or soccer because there are only so many people on one team. but in swimming the more people the more points scored. sure its important to build up stamina and endurance, but technique is very important too because if you dont have good technique you wont be able to take advantage of stamina and endurance. if i were a high school swim coach, i would definitely look for technique because it shows experience as a swimmer, and of course, most experienced swimmers have good stamina and endurance. but if i were a coach and i saw floppy strokes and big splashy kicks, there might be a lot of energy involved in that, but i think the technique speaks for itself.

Well depending on the size of the pool at the place your school swims at, you should at least be able to go front and back in about 45 seconds.

Everything depends on the coach. Ask him. For my team, its if you can swim a 1000 without stopping. But i think if u can just swim u'll make it

well for my school, there are no cuts for the swim team.
but i would imagine that you need to know all the strokes and how to start and finish properly. and probably be able to do a 50 free at least under 40 seconds.

As I recall, the long distance heats are the hardset to fill. So, start working on endurance and pacing yourself. Good luck, swimming is one of the toughest sports, both physically and mentally.

we have an excellent swim team and many of our swimmers make it to districts and place in states. and our school doesnt have tryouts! because we dont have an overflow of ppl wanting to swim competitively so they take whoever wants to join. even if your a bad swimmer or its your first time swimming, like me, they will whip you into competition shape fast and youll be able to place in your event.

depends on your team and coach. we didn't even have to try out... coach just asked us if we knew how to swim all the 4 strokes.
