The technology certain exists to make flying cars. What doesn't exist is the way to make them economically. Any new radical technologies, such as that which would be required to make a flying car, is way too expensive to implement. For this same reason, it is extremely unlikely that we will once again be seeing supersonic flight anytime soon. The fact is, a flying car would be extremely expensive to produce and sell, even in large masses.

Furthermore, flying a machine really isn't anything like getting into a car and driving it away. Flying requires substantially more training, education, planning, situational awareness, and governing rules to it conduct safely. It is hard enough training people to drive a car. Of even the best drivers, extremely few would have the aptitude to be able to train for and fly a flying car. In a dream world they would be great, in reality, however, they're an impossibility.

The only thing I read on that is that controlling traffic would be especially problematic. People seem to have enough accidents just going backwards and forwards. Imagine what it's going to be like when they can go up and down. Oh boy! But yes, once they work that out, I think it will be a possibility.

Take a look at how people drive now -- can you imagine the chaos if they had another dimension to crash in? Would you really want crashed cars falling through your roof?

No. People can't drive in two dimensions. What makes you think they could handle three?
