The color that the moon appears to be is from several reasons. The atmospheric conditions (clouds, pollution, humidity etc.) The phase the moon is in (full, half, new, rising, setting.) The time of day (dawn or dusk.) The time of year does as well.
These factors change the way light reflected by the moon reaches your eyes. These changes can appear red, orange, yellow or whatever.

the lunar eclipse causes earth's shadow to cover to moon to make it appear to be blood red... hope that helps

I've only seen it when its was low on the horizon. Which is caused I think by pollution in the atmosphere along with the atmosphere is thicker there.
