Good question.

First, do not attempt to immediately wash out the stain with cold water. Cold water will cause the stain to "fast" in some instances; in others, it will indeed dilute the stain, leaving you with rose in place of red.

Instead, I use two tricks. First, immediately apply rubbing alcohol on the stain. This will extract the chemicals that produce the red coloring. Thereafter, you can rinse with cold water, removing bothe the alcohol and the stain.

If, however, you are not in a position to remove the garment and use alcohol, instead apply an alcohol-based product directly to the stain and allow it to dry. I generally use something like an unscented mousse (yes, the hair product does serve a purpose) or old-fashioned hairspray (not just for those Big Hair days!). Later, once you have the opportunity, you can run the stain under cold water, and the red wine stain should come out.

Once having done so, wash the garment as you normally would--thereby removing any excessive residue from the mousse/hairsprays.

Good luck.

Straight from the instructions on the underside of the lid on my washing machine (I live by these & they work)

First & immediately if possible. Rinse with cold water.

Next apply non-bleaching laundry detergent as a pre-treatment & then wash as soon as is possible in COLD

Do not dry in a dryer. hang to dry

Look to see if evidence of stain still exists

If it does, then make a paste of NON-BLEACH DRY DETERGENT mixed with a couple drops of ammonia & a couple drops of hot water, let sit for @ 20 minutes & then re-wash on COLD

no matter if it remains moist pour table salt on it till the salt turns red. Scrape off the red salt and pour sparkling salt till the salt now no longer turns red. you'll go through fairly some salt, even with the indisputable fact that that's worth it. in case you drink red wine (Or worse yet, those who come for your homestead drink it) might want to be a good idea to purchase salt in bulk and keep round. this equipment is large for tablecloths.
