Oh, please. Have you guys been watching In The Heat Of The Night reruns?

I moved to Birmingham from Chicago fully expecting to find wholesale racism.

Surprise. I've found very little. In fact, compared to Chicago and Detroit, things are downright harmonious here. In fact, I went to visit a buddy in New York back in the summer, and we were hanging out in a bar that was frequented by white collar, professional types. And I was amazed at how casually people threw around the words "******" "****" and "kike" in everyday conversation. And the people out in California say the worst things possible about Hispanics.

If you said those things in a conversation in Alabama you'd be asked to leave the room.

That's not to say that there isn't residual racism here. But it's a heck of a lot milder than it is up north. So I wouldn't be so self-congratulatory about it.

All I know is that I live In Texas and there are many interracial couples and I am soo sick of people thinking that because some people here still like to wave the rebel that we are all redneck.. That is a very small number considering there are about a billion people here in the south... Those people just make the south look bad. However those rednecks are all over america unfortunatly.. I honestly believe racism is getting alot better in america.

There are people in the South that hold on to the traditional segragation and mistreatment of blacks and other minorities. There are many racists all over though, not just in the South.

Racism is everywhere. It just seems more so in the South bcuz of the history there and it is more hidden in the North.

I grew up in the south. I now live in California. It seems to be about the same here as it was there.

quit perpetuating hatred by asking inciteful questions like this. skin color does not matter to intelligent people, no matter WHAT their skin color (in other words, not just white people are racist, quite a few black people i know are racist as well, along with being very hateful and vengeful toward white people), and attitudes are based on responses to treatment received by those in contact with them, not their ancestors.

no matter where you will go you WILL find racist people. Stereotyping is not right! smart people will look past the color of a person's skin and look into their heart and judge them by who they are not what color skin they are!
