Native people were there first, including the Mohicans, Mohawks, Senecas, Oneidas, Onondagas, Lenape, Manhattans, and Montauk.

The Dutch arrived around 1609 (but Verrazano sailed by before that). The Dutch colonial era was 1620 to the 1670s, when Britain got it.

It was one of the original 13 states.

I have an intersting note of history when it was New Amsterdam under the Dutch, the Dutch traded it off to the English for a place called Guyana in South Mmerica because the country had gold
