This is a Japanese weapon used by the ninjas of the past to defend against many opponents especially good verus swords.....Its called the Kusari-Gama..although the original weapon came from the Okinawan and Chinese farmers who opposed the war lords by using the sickle called Kama....Almost all forms of martial arts came from China and was renamed and assimulated by the Japanese War-lords!!

Japanese occupied Okinawa and didn't allow the people to have weapons, so they used agricultural tools as weapons. Their small sickle originally used for cutting rice but later for fighting is the kama. With a chain added to it, another name is used, perhaps kasuri kama. The grain flail became the nunchaku, and the millstone handle became the tonfa. Okinawans were quite clever, weren't they?

Technically they're called "num-chucks" and they were NOT orginally designed as weapons. Orginally they were roughly 4 feet long, with a longer chain and used for gathering wheat and farmwork. In the 1960's they needed a "cool unique weapon" and thats why they were used for movies.

Same thing with "Chinese Stars"- didn't exist except for movies.

Both the Chinese and the Japanese used similar items as they're culture had trade by ocean
