Like any other religion, there are various branches of Buddhism. Some do admit female monks, others don't. Like the men, the women shave their heads.

From: Julia Milton, "Famous women who happen to be Buddhist... or, famous Buddhists who happen to be women" webpage, last amended on 1 January 2001, on "Women Active in Buddhism (WAiB)" website (http://members.tripod.com/~Lhamo/13famou.htm; viewed 18 August 2005):
"Belligerent bohemian punk poet. Street-hot rock and roll messiah. Ultimate female rock rebel. The Queen of Piss. That was the Patti Smith of the 1970's... Mother of two. Widow. Poet and performer. Student of religious imagery. Author. That is the Patti Smith of 1996." Thus begins "The Death and Rebirth of Patti Smith" [http://www.shambhalasun.com/Archives/Features/1996/July96/PattiSmith.htm], the Shambhala Sun interview with the rock-and-roll legend Patti Smith. The article includes her account of meeting H.H. the Dalai Lama and a short poem/prayer that Smith later wrote in his honour. Patti Smith talks about death in "The power and the glory, the resurrection and the life" [http://www2.smart.net/~fi/patti/intervus/950900bo.htm].
Patti Smith is one of 14 celebrity Buddhists assessed in Armstrong's article "Celebrities who are Buddhists... with an assessment of the degree Buddhism is a part of each of their careers." Patti Smith was ranked 14th (last) on the list in terms of the proportion of web hits (google.com: 0.2%) and current news article hits (news.google.com: 2.7%) mentioning her which also contain either the word "Buddhism" or "Buddhist." From: Tom Armstrong, "Celebrities who are Buddhists... with an assessment of the degree Buddhism is a part of each of their careers", 8 March 2005 in Zen Unbound Emagazine (http://www.zenunbound.com/celebbuds.html; viewed 18 August 2005):
Patti Smith is someone who doesn't tie Buddhism in with her career.

No, there are no female Buddhists. Buddhists have kept their religion alive by periodically raiding neighboring villages and stealing women and girls. Buddhists take these prisoners home and rape them, forcing them to make more children, but cruelly selling off the girls.
Everyone knows that, silly.
