like when someone scratches their nails along a black-board...WHY does the sound get to us so much?

Yeah, the inner ear thing.

It also has to do with the frequency at which certain sounds vibrate. There has, I am led to believe, been some research into sounds that have potential for use in crowd control and weaponry, because the frequency at which they vibrate coincides with, and so affects and disturbs the tissues of the brain and organs.

It's not that great a leap if you consider how you can "feel" the bass in your belly when you go into a really loud club.

Anyway, that's what I heard. And it hurt!

These sounds get to us because WE in our minds have not adjusted to the sound. For instance, scratching your nails on a blackboard this nature is normal for some and it just happens. People in general have things that are annoying and they just can't stand. You just obvious can't stand this noise and that is perfectly fine.

Maybe because it triggers some sort of defence mechanism innate in us? It's like a built-in warning system of potential danger I guess.

It might have something to do with our early experiences in life. Some psychologists believe that, that is what causes phobias in some people.

Yeah, I know stuff!

my personal theory is that it reminds us of possible pain and blood; truth is, deep down, we're all extremely squeamish. some just hide it better than others.

I know exactly what you mean.

One of my voices in my head was humming,
whilst another one was whistling,

Damned annoying

I agree with rubalino. It has to do with early experiences.
