I rent, so it has to be wireless. I just don't see the point in paying hundreds of dollars to install this unit and over $30/mo for monitoring when I could perhaps buy something at a store or online that does it by just paying a one-time, lesser fee.
Yet, I find no such product anywhere...why?

You're absolutely right, but it's not what you think. The reason you can't find this detector you want is because it does not exist. To do what you want you need a monitored system. Fire department dispatchers cannot dispatch equipment and men because some smoke detector went off. You must go through a central alarm company. In some municipalities you can be billed for faulty alarm calls ($2,000.00) per response. If the alarm companies equipment fails, then they would have to pay not you.

Well, I don't think you are going to find a smoke detector with a dialer. However, you might be able to get one to work with a dialer. There are a number of security suppliers that provide dialers, some with "listen in" features on them. These panels generally run around $150-200 bucks however, and you'd still need to find a way to make it work with a wireless smoke detector. (About a $100 item.)
Seems like an awful lot for an apartment. Is this something you are required to do, or want to do? Seems like renters insurance would be a better bet for your money!
