Technically you can label the variable anything you want as it only stands for a number but is not the number itself.

The dependent value is usually the X and the indpendent usually being the Y

depends. is this a graph you're creating? is it for statistics correlation studies?
if this is just high school maths, Y depends on the value of X.

x is the horizontal- independent
y is the vertical line- dependent
