You have to condition the female before you introduce her to the male, if she isn't "ready" to breed he will chase her away. If she is ready she will turn colors and form some stripes on her body. After he makes the nest he will then squeeze the eggs from the female and take them to the nest after they are done you must remove the female because she will be killed by the male and the whole process is really stressful on her. He will care for the fry till they hatch. After they hatch you must remove the male and feed the fry baby brine shrimp and be sure to keep the tank covered because with cool air passing over the top the baby fry can get pneumonia.

The male fish actually makes a bubble nest and then the female comes and lays the eggs in the nest. They never have to be close to eachother to make babies because of this....

Let's start with one of my pet peeves...it's beta...pronounced bet-ahh...not bayta...beta...check it out. Next, they are usually shipped in a tablespoon of water from Asian territories. Male beta's will build a bubble nest & then the male embraces the female & they "gyrate" & she releases the eggs & he fertilizes them & then takes them to the bubble nest. One baby in each bubble. Good enuf?

In nature, they live in large areas where they don't get on each other's nerves so bad. In aquariums, YOU have to provide the necessary conditions for them to be able to breed.
