Obviously, the man is quite evil. However, from a legal point of view, whatever crimes he is being accused of, whether he committed them or not, are when he was the dictator of Iraq. Since he was the dictator he could follow his own rules and thereby, he broke no laws despite his involvement in thousands of murders, tortures, etc.

So by what authority is he being tried, since at the time he committed these things there were no specific laws against it? Is there something I'm not considering?

Please be nice and no dumb answers please.

Since the trail is not being held in the United States it is being held in Iraq. Since it is their country they can use whatever rules they wish to abide by. Their technicalities are the ones they choose.

The problem isn't that Saddam shouldn't be tried for crimes against humanity, but that by the same token there's a much stronger case for trying Bush and cronies!

remarkable, its now no longer US-type justice. The courtroom docket which will convict him consists of politically antagonistic and religiously antagonistic Iraqis. he's very almost sure to be convicted and has no actual risk for cover. From that attitude the trial is a farce.

since he elected himself into power, that makes him a dictator. there were, technically, elections to vote in another leader, however those who chalked their names on the ballot, never made it the polls themselves. strange ain't it?......his goverment was based on fear, torture and intimidation. not to mention mass muder, cheimcal warfare and a host of other war crimes. since there is not laws that HE broke according to his countries laws, he has broken numerous war crimes and UN sanctions that are globally upheld...sort of. so his trial is legal under the terms of the geneva convention but since the iraqis are all too stupid to realize what laws are, they feel it's THEIR obligation to try him and convict him for attrocities he committed against them.
