My sister has hi-speed internet through her cable company. She has a little box attached to her PC. Why is it when I bring my laptop over I can't seem to log on? My laptop is less than a yr. old and has a ethernet (spelling?) card already in it. Can you help me so I can log on while I am there. Thanks...I give points!

That little box?
She needs a router, which will assign separate addresses for each computer hooked up, and she'll need extra Ethernet jacks for additional computers to be connected.
Once you are there, you'll have to create a network connection on your laptop.

I am assuming that by "little box" you mean cable modem and you are taking the cable from you sister PC and connecting it to your laptop ethernet port? if so then it should work just make sure that all of your TCP/IP settings are set to "obtain automatically". If not then change them and reboot your laptop. Otherwise, to share the connection get a routerto hook up betweek your cable modem and computers. If that doesnt work then the cable company might have the connection restricted to only your sisters PC via the adapters' MAC address. Another probability could be that your cable company requires a small software install that can be downloaded though their website to make the connection work.

My experience with data from the cable company is limited to Charter. The cable modem seems to work with any computer I've plugged in.

I suspect your sister's cable company either installed special software on her PC or is trapping the MAC address of the PC trying to use the Internet. If the MAC address is not authorized, then the cable company ignores it.

Bottom line - call the cable company tech support and tell them you have a new PC you want to attach.

First make sure your cable connection is good from her hub/switch to your laptop.

Next:
Go to Start:
Run:
Type: cmd (hit enter)
at the prompt: type ipconfig /all (hit enter)
look for ip address and a gateway.

if you don't see a ip address or it says 169.168.
type: ipconfig /release (hit enter)
after a second you will see everything turn to 0.0.0 etc

then from the prompt type ipconfig /renew (hit enter)

if you now see a ip address try

tracert yahoo.com
or ping yahoo.com

of you get any replies or you actually see a trace route to different ips.. you should be okay

other than that, check your firewall settings and the firewall settings on the router.
