It's supposed to be the serial number inside but now those are even being put in the fakes I think. I can usually tell a fake from a real one. Sometimes you can tell by the leather used for the straps.

its leather has to smell fishy and have a good grain, the stitches have to be small and uniform, there should be a dust bag, and a leather panel w/ identification number on the inside of the bag, and these little glossy paper things u get w/ ur bag that tell u the history of Coach and the proper care for ur purse- ull find those inside the bag when u buy it
also, all the buttons, zippers, etc. have to have 'Coach' stamped on them. in other words, every availble surface besides the fabric of the bag itself.

you can eaisly tell by the pattern- usually its a bit off , the straps wont look right or the hardware doesnt match what other coach ones look like
