Turn off the power , then take a pair of needle nose pliars and grab the edge and try to turn the base out. You may have hold the socket for the light to keep it from turning also.

A good way to get a broken lightbulb out of the socket,is to use the handle of a broom to unscrew the socket part .Just turn it
counter clockwise till the metal piece falls out.

Please don't use a potato, not 'cuz you will get hurt, but simply because you will look like my grandma in doing so. Simply follow the advice of the other respondents and use a pair of insulated (rubber grips on the handles) needle nose pliers, grab the edge of the bulb base and turn it until it comes out. Make sure that you have the switch off first, there really is no need to turn the breaker off it's just a waste of time, especially if you live in one of the 90% of homes that have improperly labeled breaker/fuse boxes.

Some folks will tell you to wedge a potatoe but I'm afraid of putting something as liquidy as a potato into a spot near electricity.

I take a wooden spoon, put a clean dishtowel over it until it's thick enough to wedge into the broken socket piece. Then twist it out and grab it with the towel

Be careful, and good luck!

First: turn off the circuit to that light! Then use a tester to make sure there's no current.

When I've had a bulb break, I've just used a pair of plier to grab the base of the bulb and twist it out. No reason to be ruining perfectly good potatoes for the job.

this is the 4th time Ive seen this! I am electrician for over 30 yrs never heard of the potato trick!.. First shut off power...get needle nose pliers, and pry them between metal socket and bulb... twist to left and it will be hard yet slowly rip out a bit at a time

Shut off all power to the socket at the breaker box. Take a potato cut it in half. Push it on to the socket and turn it just like the light bulb should turn counter clockwise. Just make sure you turn off power at breaker and not at the switch.

make sure the light is off, and take half of a potato and stick it over the broken end.. then twist it out like a normal bulb... it might be better to turn off the breaker first...
