i recently bought 2 hermit crabs and at the time i got them i also purchased a book about them in case i had any questions and so i would know precisely how to care for them, and in the book it says that they cannot reproduce in captivity because they need the special conditions and things that the ocean provides.

No, hermit crabs will not typcially breed in captivity. There is just something un-recreatable about the ocean that doesn't allow breeding in captivity. Scientists have tried unsuccessfully to recreate it.

There are cases where babies are born, but it's extremly rare, and well, to be honest, who knows if the people are making it up or not.

No ,they cannot breed in captivity,as they lay their eggs in the ocean ,and the larvae are free-swimming;they don't move into shells until they are fully developed.I suppose if you had a huge set-up with half land and half saltwater, there might be a chance for them to reproduce, but a very slim one.

they don't breed like other animals. They can mate with their selves. They are not male or female but both and yes they can breed in captivity

Hermit crabs return to the sea to deposit their eggs. Due to this they cannot be breed in captivity.
