I think it has something to do with your ears being dirty.

Gosh that's an old one, It means there is so much dirt in your ears that you could grow potato's...so clean them!
But remember the smallest thing you should shove in your ears is your elbow!!!

when i was young my grandmother used to tell me i am growing potatos in my ears...i was not cleaning them and she used to tease me into washing them,

Yep, that is an old one. My Momma used to say, "Let me clean those tators out of your ears." when bathing us children.
