I hadn't really seen this since I was a kid (and it freaked the hell out of me as a four year old) and I haven't read the book, it's just that i watched it out the corner of my eye on Film Four this evening. While the rabbits go on their quest for a new warren they come across a very fey rabbit called Cowslip who invites them back to his sinister, and very empty, warren. I had to answer the phone (typical) and when i got back to the movie they'd all decided they were better off carrying on with their hunt.
What was wrong with Cowslip? It wasn't that depressing poem he recited was it? C'mon, it's got to be something better than that.
Does the book go into it any further?

They were being systematically killed by humans, and they were all complicit in it. All the rabbits that lived there were in denial about it even though they all knew what was going on.
Thats why there were so many empty burrows there, and why no predators-the farmer killed any foxes or anything that threatened his food larder.
They stay there a few days in the book till they figure it out.

I think the answer below is a little deranged.
