We're all doing just that by spending time here in Y!A, but are we doing it for the other people, who could not care less about us?
Nah, it's because we enjoy it.
You may be talking about Y!A, or something else, but the answer is because you get something out of it.

I do care, of course. I've had a look under your bed, and there are no monsters there, so don't be scared. Even your father is away, and if he should so much as look at you I promise I'll be the monster under his bed. I'll be the monster under anyone's bed, if they don't care for you but bother you anyway. My boots will always be under yours though.

Sleep.. Kick someone's teeth in, but then have peaceful dreams.. ;o)

Because you get something you need out of it. If you didn't get anything you needed out of it, you wouldn't do it. Ask yourself, what do you get out of giving what you are giving? You get something that means something pretty powerful to you, otherwise you wouldn't bother. Period.
