They believe that we learn through the process of socialization, we learn the norms and values of our culture through the use of modeling and imitation.
I suppose the main reason why sociologist believe that human behavior is determined by nurture is because many of their views Criticize society and the actions of people. If our behavior was determined biologically they would not be able to blame it on social problems. Therefore the subject would be based on nothing. Socio - meaning society, Ology - the study of.

Biological determinism is a myth; probably started by sociologists. The effects of the genes are probabilistic and the genotype expresses itself in the phenotype, which has environmental influence to it. Only a sociologist would erect that " straw man " of biological determinism, while promulgating a environmental determinism. Try to think continuously, not dichotomously.

Because outside factors have an influence on the development of a person's behavior. I am living proof of the theory being somewhat untrue. I (and my twin sister) were adopted at 2 weeks of age. We found our biological family at the age of 28. According to our biological father's family (he passed away before we had a chance to meet him) we both demonstrate many of his mannerisms and process thoughts in much the same way that he did. Now I couldn't swear that they didn't see those things simply from the desire to see them but it has been mentioned in the company of individuals at different points in time.
On the other hand, we have 2 half-brothers born to our birth mother. Neither finished high school, neither can hold a steady job. In our adopted (and actual) family, dropping out was never thought of let alone considered at ANY point in time. Unemployment after the age of 15 was not an option if we wanted to actually wear clothing (we both baby-sat, shoveled snow, cleaned houses etc well ahead of that though). Our childhood was hardly "Leave it to Beaver" but I think we came out ahead in the deal.

Sociologists say we are formed according to our environment. Part is true, but biologists and genetists are discovering that our behaviour is influenced by our genes in a very strong way.

psycological conditioning is a powerful thing. If someone is raped, tortured or psycologically ruined what does biology have to do with it at that point? I'm sure biology has something to do with the basic behavior set, but ones life experiences and how they are treated as a child to an adult can throw a wrench in any biological plan.

They believe this because certain aspects of a persons behaviour is socially changed by peer groups and environment. A lot of a persons personality is socially effected because the way they are brought up and the people they are friends with. Peoples attitudes/behaviour automatically adjust to what they surround them selves with.
