Apparently Giambi had a cortisone shot last night and Torre didn't want to play him.
Moot point, really. Even with Giambi (or even Tino Martinez) the Yankees still get spanked today. The Tigers simply outpitched and outdefended them.

He was thinking "Giambi and Sheff have both been hitting horrible, but at least Sheffield is a decent defender."
