Your ears, nose and throat are all connected, you probably stimulate your throat when inserting the Q-tip. And just so you know...Q-tips are BAD for your ears. It says not to put them in your ears right on the box. I suggest an ear wash kit...a little on the expensive side for the size you get, but you only use it once a week, and it lasts a while, and its much safer than running the risk of damaging your tympanic membrane (eardrum) :)

During development the lining of your throat turns inward and the lining of your head turns inward. From the outside in you have the outer, middle and inner ear. Your ear canal actually goes all the way throughj to your throat. Your ear drum is a membrane separating inside from out. Sometimes the nerves and sensations get confused. Sticking something in your ear can cause you to cough.

I have done this before lol. I dont know what it is, but when I used to clean my left ear and the Q-tip went in the wrong way my eyes would water and I'd cough. I think it is a bodies natural instinct.
