Hi. Metallic elements have the ability to form positive ions. This is, of course, related to the outer electron cloud. Look at it from this point of view then look at the probability of the cloud giving the element the characteristics of metal.

I disagree with the first answerer. I think that there probably is a quantum mechanical reason for the preponderance of metallic elements having to do with the statistical behavior of the most loosely held electrons of the neutral atoms. I don't know what that reason is, exactly, but I'll bet that there is one.

I don't really think that there is a reason. These elements are elements that were discovered and then put into an organized chart. Elements aren't things that were just made. those are the compounds and such. I guess that's just how God put it out there.

Because there are more electrons available in those electronic configuration levels to give more elements with metallic properties.
