Trillian works fine and is probably the one you have heard of. They have a basic version for free and a pro version which you must pay for.

However, I use Gaim, which is a free open source option. I am quite happy with Gaim; it has been very stable for me and lets me run all my accounts in one window. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
