You're right that it is comical.
This is called a "pratfall." The simplest pratfall joke has two men walking along the street. The first finishes a banana and throws it over his shoulder. The second steps on it, slips and falls down.
Most people regard this as funny.
It's even funnier if the man who tossed the banana is distracted by something and has to walk back where he came from and slips and falls on the very banana he threw. This is what happens with your question, where the person trying so hard to prove he's right makes a fool of himself.
This is a standard classical comedy situation. The pratfall was a staple of the silent movies (most of which were comedies).
